Keep our Energy Future in New Mexico
In 2021, New Mexicans said NO to the Avangrid/PNM Merger, but this company keeps coming back. Our volunteer organization is working to change that.
In 2021, New Mexicans said NO to the Avangrid/PNM Merger, but this company keeps coming back. Our volunteer organization is working to change that.
Across the state, New Mexican's stood up against this merger in 2021 giving public testimony in the hearing. Our former elected Public Regulation Commission (PRC) listened to the people and reviewed the evidence then voted unanimously to reject the merger since it was 'not in the public interest'. Watch this video and listen to Former NM State Senator Eric Griego Montoya discuss it on New Mexico in Focus, back in December 2021, soon after the old PRC rejected the merger. He's predicting the future and he's right.
So what has changed? Why isn't this just over?
The PRC itself has changed. New members, appointed and not elected by the people, may take this up again because Avangrid appealed the former PRC's decision to the New Mexico Supreme Court. The Hearing starts Sept 11, 2023.
The 2023 PRC appears to have taken sides already based on some potentially illegal communications. We found out about them through a public records request. Read more here from local news channel KRQE
Join us in calling on the NM Public Regulation Commission to uphold its duty to protect us, New Mexicans, and the public interest against a take over by a corrupt, incompetent and aggressive bully, Avangrid.

A 2022 Brown University Labratory's analysis found that in Connecticut, Avangrid opposed more climate legislation between 2013 and 2020 than any other group identified in the report.
They spent $2.8 million lobbying AGAINST climate bills during that period.
Avangrid claims to be an climate leader and champiion but the reality is far different.
Avangrid-owned utilities around the world have a long history of evading regulatory control and routinely racks up millions in fines and penalties.
The PRC Hearing Examiner in the first merger hearing had to halt proceedings to get Avangrid to follow the rules.
New Mexicans play by the rules, pay their bills, and follow the law. Avangrid should do the same.
Avangrid plans to use NM as a 'beachhead' to sell our wind and solar out of state and even internationally.
Shouldn't WE own it instead?
This merger shuts out local competition and gains monopoly control of our resources. Avangrid owned subsidiary companies will own new energy generation.
Complex ownership structures are also difficult to regulate. That's their plan. Monopolies and self dealing are bad for New Mexicans.

During the first merger hearing all the evidence was reviewed by the Hearing Examiner. He concluded this merger with PNM was not in the public's best interest and our old elected PRC agreed.
Public comments at the hearing were 500 to 1 AGAINST the merger.
We already rejected the merger but PNM executives and some well-connected politicos who stand to benefit from it won't take no for an answer.
We can't let corporations determine our future and buy our democracy.
